I think this is a good question that we should all ask ourselves. I commonly see people “working out” for the sake of working out – often just chasing a calorie burn. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes a screaming calorie burn workout is what we need but when it is our dominate modality it can lead to haphazard training practices that can contribute to pre-existing imbalances, aches and pains, and potentially injuries. </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">One of the biggest goals we have at LD is to teach the skill of high-quality movement – how to improve range of motion and create strong and stable positions within that range. Understanding optimal positions and minimizing less than optimal so that we set individuals up for best possible outcomes in each workout. It was delicious. However, most of the week we were there we ate a ton of less healthy options because I thought “I’m on vacation!”. Building the metabolic and cardiovascular efficiency is one part. Building the structural strength to adequately handle the repetitive nature of running is the other. In my experience people tend to develop the engine (cardio) faster than the structural strength to express that engine. This can lead to aches, pains, and injuries presenting themselves early in the process of starting to run.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">To limit the likelihood of this happening and to build a better aerobic base focus first on consistent running, then add to your frequency (I think working your way to at least 4 days a week should be the goal). Then you can start increasing volume to desired mileage (take your time).
