#QUOTEOFTHEMONTH AS 2019 APPROACHES |
| The New Year is approaching and we all know what that means: New Years Resolutions. We can poke fun at the likely case that many people will not stick to their resolutions after January, but at Lions Den we encourage everyone in our community to set goals and go after them. What's important to remember during this process is that it is okay to fail. It is okay to slip up on your goals. As the quote above states, it is the person who refuses to stop fighting that gets the victory. We must look at the New Year as a continuation of our fight; the fight to be healthy, the fight to be strong and the fight to call ourselves a Lion! |

#MOBILITYA common goal among active people is to move and feel better. To improve mobility and movement quality we must first start with a foundational component, proper spinal mechanics. This is often overlooked and under practiced. Organizing and stabilizing the spine in any environment is paramount to improving mobility and physical well-being. Below are daily situations to be mindful of our spinal mechanics. |
|
Faulty Standing Posture (pic 1) Correct Standing Posture (pic 2)
Standing Bracing Sequence
1. Set your pelvis neutral. Feet forward, squeeze your glutes, externally rotate your hips.
2. Align your rib cage over your pelvis. As you exhale, moderately stiffen your trunk.
|
|
3. Organize your shoulders. Externally rotating your arms at the shoulder, then relax your wrists but keep the shoulders down and back.
4. Maintain a neutral spine, with moderate core activation and joints organized.
|
| If you feel yourself starting to slouch or searching for less than optimal positions, then you’ve found yourself a red flag moment! Take the opportunity to re-organize your posture by repeating standing bracing sequence. The trick here is to always be aware of your spinal mechanics. |
Faulty Texting Position (pic 1) Correct Seated Texting Position (pic 2)
Seated Posture
1. Organize your body in the correct standing posture.
2. Keeping trunk engaged and feet straight, drive hips and hamstrings back, tilt torso forward, sit your butt (ischial tuberosities) on the edge of the seat.
|
|
3. Maintain low to moderate trunk tension with spine neutral, feet straight and shoulders organized.
4. When you’re ready to stand, position feet straight and forward with shins vertical.
5. Elevate your hip off the seat, feel for your hips and hamstrings.
6. Extend hips and knees, then squeeze your glutes and re-establish your standing braced neutral posture.
|
|
| The goal here is to rewire your brain through constant awareness of proper spinal mechanics. If you have any questions, please ask one of the “Mobility Nerds” aka Lions Den Personal Trainers. |

Recipe of the Month - Mussels with Anchovy, Rosemary and Pickled ChiliesWhat it is Zeal's mussel appetizer is at the top of our list because it's not only nutrient-packed, it's also delicious! These steamed beauties are served hot in a savory broth of anchovy, white wine and garlic, and a touch of butter. They're topped with an assortment of pickled chilies to add a little zip and zest to this warm delicious dish. Why we chose it Mussels are a fantastic choice for athletes because they're packed with protein and calcium, are low in fat and calories, and are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which help combat inflammation and speed up recovery from strenuous athletic activity. Mussels are also low in the food chain, which means that they have lower levels of mercury than many other sea foods. Additionally, they're a great sustainable choice, so cultivating and harvesting them has a very minimal impact on the environment. How you can get it Try Zeal's mussel appetizer at their Landmark location or call in your to-go order for pickup! This dish is available during both lunch and dinner. |
