Enter the Spartan Race - for those of you not familiar, Spartan Races are next level - there are&nbsp;rope climbs, monkey bars, heavy bag hoists, sled drags and pulls, tire flips, heavy carries with elevation, BARBED WIRE crawls, inverted wall climbs and other ways to test yourself. There is also a TON of running...and unlike other races, if you fail an obstacle you have to complete 30 burpees. The added challenge is why we fell in love with this sport, completing our first Spartan Sprint in March of 2017.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">By 2018 we had completed our first Spartan Trifecta - a Spartan Sprint (3-5 “miles” and 20-25 obstacles),&nbsp;Super (8-10 “miles” and 25-30 obstacles) and&nbsp;Beast (12-14 “miles” and 30-35 obstacles); to-date, I have completed over 12 Spartan Races worldwide and my dad has completed 8. These races are designed for maximum fatigue, requiring both physical and mental resilience. Completing the Trifecta qualified us to participate in the Spartan Trifecta World Championship 2019 in Sparta, Greece!</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">t’s one thing to complete a Trifecta throughout the year, but in the World Championship you complete all three of them in one weekend. You start with the Super, rest for an hour, and hit the Sprint in the afternoon; then you wake up the next morning and tackle the Beast. For those of you doing the math, that's up to 29 miles of running AND 90 obstacles over two days. Not to mention elevation changes running through the hills of Sparta, jet lag, or the fact that a good third of the course was running in water.&nbsp;Preparation was key.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">It goes without saying, we never would have been able to survive this grueling experience if we hadn’t trained for it. Training with Wade and Sunnee at Lions Den really made a difference in our overall performance. Core stability, range of motion, balance, and grip strength are critical in obstacle course races! My dad trained with Wade and I trained with both Sunnee and Wade. Our time was limited, but the few weeks with working with them prior were spot on. Sunnee incorporate a lot of exercises that easily translated into the obstacles on the course - farmer carries, medicine ball slams, sled pushes and pulls, pull-ups, deadlifts, balance exercises, squats, and burpees - all helped me build up the strength I needed to be able to be successful. With some obstacles, having flexibility and range of motion was critical. For instance, the 8ft wall - as a female I’m not likely to muscle up over that. So I have to be able to run and jump, grip the top of the wall, press my feet into the wall, walk them up to my chest, and then swing my leg over the wall. That requires a lot of grip strength but also hip mobility. This is something that Sunnee and Wade were both great at working on with us.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">I love that we were able to tell them what our goals were and they tailored our training sessions to align with it. They do their research and invest a real interest in their clients. If my 60 year old dad and I can run these OCRs with their help, you can do it too! Look – this time of year is notorious for encouraging us all to make big radical changes and while I am a big supporter of big goals and making change.. you want to go about it the right way! Making TOO BIG of a change can set you up for failure. Especially when it comes to making changes in our diet.  </p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">So today I want to talk about how you can replace some of the things you might currently be eating into healthier options so you can still enjoy the food in your life and stay on track with your goals.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Salad dressings and cooking oils shouldn’t have to be avoided but these foods contain some highly processed oils that cause a ton of damage in the body and will not be helpful at all in your goals to be healthier or get lean. Look at the current offerings of dressings in your refrigerator. Do they contain canola oil or vegetable oil? Is there sugar in it? Are there a bunch of other words you can’t pronounce? These are food items to avoid. Instead, look for dressings/sauces that are avocado oil based and don’t have a long list of weird ingredients. My absolute favorite brand is <a href="https://www.primalkitchen.com/?rfsn=2344284.f9c287" target="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" style="color:#0e8ac4 !important;">Primal Kitchen</a>! You can find them at Sprouts or Whole Foods; very tasty and void of all the bad ingredients. When it comes to cooking oils, try to stick with grass fed butter, olive oil, avocado oil, and/or coconut oil.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;margin-bottom:1.25em;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Think about other foods you consume a lot during the week and ask yourself how you can make that food a healthier option. For example, if you eat a lot of white rice, maybe you could replace a meal or two with cauliflower rice for less carbohydrate intake and more nutrients from the cauliflower. If you like to drink soda maybe you can replace a few of them with a flavored sparkling water. If you’re a sucker for pasta (who isn’t?) then try making veggie noodles!</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Get creative and use the internet for suggestions or new recipes! But make these changes fun and enjoyable and you’ll set yourself up better for success! </p>

Everyone has their own mobility challenges and restrictions. The following program is a template and it can be personalized to meet your own needs. As a reminder, joint mobilizations (mobs) are great prior to workouts; muscle dynamics (re-lengthening) after training; and restoring sliding surfaces (smash) after training, a shower and/or before bed. Everyday mobilize an area/position that you wish to improve, whether it's a weakness or a position of emphasis for that days training. My personal favorite way to combine mobs is to smash an area of focus in a position I’m trying to improve to restore, followed by re-lengthening the tissue with a different mob focused on the same goal. When applying these two methods remember to use the 4 - 4 - 8 count when breathing for at least 10 breaths or more.</p><p class="" style="color:inherit;font-size:.9375em;line-height:1.618em;font-weight:normal;margin-bottom:0;font-family:'DejaVu Sans Condensed', 'Liberation Sans', 'Nimbus Sans L', 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;">Work on finding ways to build mobility maintenance work into your day, for example: when you wake up; during a break at work; before, during, or after a workout; while watching your favorite show on TV; brushing your teeth; etc. You get the point, it's easy to find a couple minutes here and there to restore mobility. Daily maintenance leads to long-term change and today is the day to start a <strong>New You</strong>!
